For my final reflection blog post, I will be reflecting on what I have learned this past semester in my filmmaking course. Over the past semester, I have gained much more knowledge into the world of filmmaking then I ever had before, which I believe has certainly helped make me a better filmmaker all the way around. Over the course of the semester, I have learned many different skills, such as how to plan shoots, how to cooperate with other people when working on a filmmaking project, and how to edit footage together just to name a few. Prior to this course, I only had a rough idea of how movies were planned out when it came time to shoot them, but I have since learned that all rely on either a script or a storyboard to best plan how each shot will be filmed. It is also at this stage that I have learned it is very important to cooperate with other people who you may be working with on a film project. This is important for several reasons. One reason is to make sure everyone is on the same page and understands what their job is on the project at hand. Another reason is that by working with other people, a person can further improve the project they are working on by taking suggestions from others on how to make it better in ways that they may have not thought of on their own.
Another reason to be cooperative with the other people who may work on a film project is to remember that filmmaking is a much larger task then it may appear and takes many people to make it happen. Once filming is done on a movie project, the footage must then be edited together to make the finished problem, which means a lot of hard work. During the editing process, one must choose what footage shots they want to use in the finished product and cut the rest out. Once all of the correct shots are chosen, they must then be put into their correct place in order of the film’s continuity. What this means is to line up the footage in a way that makes sense to the viewer in the sense that the story is told in the right order from start to finish. Once this task is completed, the shots may be edited to add music and/or sound effects to them. Lastly, but certainly not least, it is important to list the names of the people who worked on the project at the end of the film in the credits as it very important to give these people credit for their hard work on the film.
Over the past five months, I feel that I have gained much insight into what it is to babe a good filmmaker, and these three aspects are just a few of the many different lessons I learned from my filmmaking course. I hope to continue as a filmmaker on my own in the future and I will be sure to use all that I learned throughout this semester as to make my own films better than anything I could have produced before.
